Urban Legend or Nasty Fact?
New York City-based artist Sally Davies bought a McDonald's Happy Meal in April, and left it out in her kitchen to see how well it would hold up over time. She photographed the Happy Meal each week and posted the pictures online to record the results of her experiment. Now, just over six months later, the Happy Meal has yet to even grow mold.
Wellness and nutrition educator Karen Hanrahan claims to have kept a McDonald's burger since 1996 with similar results.
Of course, McDonald's claims their food is made with whole, natural ingredients and contains no preservatives. They responded to Davies' project by issuing a statement defending the quality of the chain's food and blasting Davies' "completely unsubstantiated" work as something out of "the realm of urban legends."
I've been trying to find a way to end my daughter's romance with McDonald's, and maybe this is it. I'll let you know how my experiment turns out, but I am drawing the line at a month and throwing in the towel at the first sign of mold.
